Patty Stoner's Sixth Grade Class

I was born in Lebanon, SD, and lived there until Lyle and I got married at which time I moved to Gettysburg and have lived here ever since. I had three brothers who are deceased and I sister who lives in North Dakota.

I graduated from Lebanon High School, played basketball all through high school, was boys’ basketball cheerleader, served as pianist for all chorus classes, and participated in drama productions.

I graduated from Northern State University and began my teaching career. Through the years I have taught Kindergarten through eighth grade. I truly love and enjoy what I do—it is not a job—it is a passion!

My husband, Lyle, and I have two daughters. Our oldest daughter, Debbie Jensen, was instrumental instructor in Groton, SD, for 28 years. She retired two years ago to assist her husband with their business, Pizza Ranch, in Aberdeen. Debbie and Greg have two children, Jenna Hansen (Kent), music teacher in Aberdeen, and Justin Jensen also a music teacher is currently managing the family business in Aberdeen. Our daughter, Vicki Beckler, is a traveling registered nurse. Vicki has two sons, Jason, Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources, in Marshall, Minnesota, and Kyle, Franchise Owner Matco Tools, in Brookings, SD. We have also been blessed with two great-grandsons, Reid (Jason and Amanda) and Elliott (Jenna and Kent), both three years old.

Lyle, my husband, owned and operated a grocery store in Gettysburg for thirty years retiring in 1996 due to health problems at that time. Lyle and I have always enjoyed camping, riding our motorcycles, boating, doing water sports (in the past!!) fishing, and spending time with family.

My goals in the classroom are to have a positive and safe learning environment, encourage my students to always perform to their ability both academically and behaviorally, promote high self-esteem for each student, and have high expectations not only for my students but also for myself.

I work very diligently to keep parents informed and involved in their child’s educational development and growth. I am always available to discuss, receive suggestions, or answer your concerns. I firmly believe that children will benefit from parents and educators working as an educational team to insure that students succeed and continue to grow in their academic endeavors. I am here for you and your child.

Classroom Management

To insure a safe and positive classroom atmosphere, there must be rules that everyone abides by. These include:

Having mutual respect
Always being responsible
Being an active listener
Following directions
Make “smart” choices
No “cold prickles” only “warm fuzzies”

Grading/Class Work

All assignments are important and are expected to be prepared by the due date. Any assignments not completed by the due date will still have to be completed. If completed and handed in the same day, the grade will be reduced by one letter grade. If it is handed in the following day, the grade will be reduced by two letter grades. After that day, the completion of the assignment will still be required, but the grade will be recorded as a zero. If your child receives a zero due to not completing the assignment by the following day, I will send a notice home to you, phone you, or email you.

Every student has an assignment book, and assignments are written on the white board each day. Students are also reminded at the end of each day what assignments are due and asked to write them in their assignment book. Students are informed at least two days prior to having a test. They are also given an outline or notes in science and social studies to study or all tests until they have learned to take their own notes or outline.

If your child is absent due to an excusable absence, they are given two school days for each day absent to complete their assignments. The above reductions in grade are also applied if makeup work isn’t completed on time.

I am available by 7:45 AM, usually available during my lunch time (11.50-12:10), and after school unless I have a meeting, supervising the After School Program, or a prior commitment to help your child with their school work. Students and parents are always welcome to call me on my cell phone or in the evening at home. All students and parents have received both my cell and home phone numbers. You are also welcome to send me an email at

but I usually do not have time during the school day to check my email. If you have a message for me that I need to be immediately aware of, either text me on my cell or call Ms. Johnson and ask her to call me on my school phone.

Students may have homework in the evenings. We make every effort to complete the majority of the schoolwork in the classroom, but if the student does not use his/her time effectively or if we have unexpected interruptions during the day, they will probably have homework.

Students will have homework to prepare for weekly spelling tests (usually on Wednesday and Friday) and scheduled tests such as science, social studies, reading, etc. Please make reading their Accelerated Reading books a nightly requirement.

Students are asked to have 15 AR points each quarter, and the AR points also affect their reading grade at the end of the quarter. I encourage you to be involved in your child’s homework.
